Ukulele Class Syllabus

2006-2007

Welcome to the Waimea High School Music program. Students will gain a well-rounded music education by not only learning Ukulele playing technique, but also expanding their knowledge of music theory, history and multicultural music. Performing is an integral part of the success of the music program but can only be obtained by diligent practice, hard work, and concentration.

The following music Standards will be emphasized:  Perform a variety of music alone and with others; Performing patterns, melodies, chord progressions, variations and accompaniments; compose and arrange music within specified guidelines; read and notate music and tabulature;  play listen to, analyze, describe, and evaluate music and music performance; understand music of various styles and cultures and it’s relationships to the other arts.

Students are asked to:

1. Follow Waimea High School Rules in the classroom and on any function.

2. Come prepared with their music and a positive attitude.

3. Participate in all concerts and performances in concert attire (2-3 per year).

4. Do their best at all times.

 

Grades will be through the use of letter grades (A, B, C, D, F) and will be determined by the amount of effort the student displays in the areas of attendance, participation and cooperation which are all weighted evenly for grading purposes.  

 

1.      Attendance

*Classroom rehearsals.

*Concerts.

*Dress Rehearsals.

 

2.  Participation

*Play during rehearsals, concerts and dress rehearsals.

*Complete written classroom assignments (writing chords, tablature, compositions,  

             evaluations and assessments).

 

       3.  Cooperation

*Listen when the teacher and other classmates are talking.

*Help out (offers suggestions, hands out folders, assists another and so on).

*Works together as a team with the rest of the group.

*Picks up area after rehearsal (chairs, folders….etc.).

 

The grading scale is:

90-99%  A              80-89 B            70-79 C            60-69 D           59 or below F

Everyone is an essential member of the Menehune Ukulele and our goal is to work together as a team and have an enjoyable year while learning musical concepts and improving our musicianship along the way As a result, all students are asked to attend all rehearsals and performances.  A missed performance will constitute a drop in one’s overall letter grade. 

Concert attire for performance activities will be:

Women: Blue Aloha wear (dress or shirt and pants).

Men: Blue Aloha shirt and Black pants.
